Maps of Solar Eclipses from 1940 to 1944

The wartime total solar eclipse of September 21, 1941 crossed the Soviet Union, China, and several islands in the South Pacific. Because of the ongoing war, no expeditions were sent from Europe or the United States, but two interesting expeditions were mounted to remote locations in China.

The Chinese Solar Eclipse Observation Committee sent two teams to Lintao and Chong’an. The expedition to Lintao was especially difficult with vehicles driving 3,200 kilometers over rough terrain and under threat of attacks by Japanese planes. At one point, 27 enemy planes threatened the eclipse party, however the observations were successful and published.
