Maps of Solar Eclipses from 1860 to 1864
During the total solar eclipse of July 18, 1860, drawing of the Sun’s corona during totality showed a curious curved feature not commonly seen. This arced shape is now interpreted as a massive coronal mass ejection underway during totality. Coronal mass ejections were not understood and identified as such until satellite observations of the Sun in the 1970s.
