Maps of Solar Eclipses from 1865 to 1869
The total solar eclipse of August 7, 1869 crossed Russia, the United States and Canada. The path of totality in North America went from Alaska to North Carolina.
This eclipse was greeted with enthusiasm by the public and astronomers mounted several expeditions to study the Sun’s corona with telescopes and photography.
During eclipse, astronomer William Harkness made observations with a spectroscope that proved the corona was a feature of the Sun, not a tenuous lunar atmosphere.
