Maps of Solar Eclipses from 1935 to 1939

Many eclipse chasers have a favorite drink to celebrate a successful viewing of the Sun’s corona. Examples of spirits to enjoy are champagne, Corona beer, and egg creams for this from New York.

This charming eclipse advertisement Blackout at Cerro de Pasco adds another spirit to this list: whisky! The ad did depict a real eclipse expedition to Peru. It’s unknown whether the scientists in the ad were the actual participants, but perhaps an ad sponsorship helped defray expedition costs.

The lovely painting of the eclipse was also made from Cerro de Pasco, Peru and can be found at digitalcollections.amnh.org/archive/Total-Eclipse-2URM1TG6R37T.html. Tragically, the painter D. Owen Stephens died on a ship while returning home after the eclipse.
